David McLay Kidd Design, Machrihanish Dunes is, the first true championship links golf course built on the west coast of Scotland in 100 years. Isolated on the southern tip of the Mull of Kintyre, a narrow peninsula jutting out from the west coast sits the site of Machrihanish Dunes.
The site is on a designated S.S.S.I (Site of Special Scientific Interest), a very delicate eco system, with rare orchids and grass species. Building the course had many restrictions, only selected areas could be altered for golf.
All 18 greens were shaped along with tee pads, bunkers and selected fairways. The key to the project was damage limitation to the existing turf, so “Tip-Toeing” the machines around site was essential. Although a tough project with so many restrictions, a seamless join between golf and nature was achieved, paving the way for similar projects in the future.
